Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, through March 12
A participatory children's exhibition
The Seoul Museum of Art has invited Do Ho Suh, an artist active both in Korea and abroad, to present the 2022 children's exhibition <Do Ho Suh and Children: Artland>, on view through March 12, 2023, in the Children's Gallery of the Buk-Seoul Museum of Art.
This exhibition is a participatory show for young visitors, built on <Artland>, a sculpture that Do Ho Suh created with his family over seven years using children's clay. It draws on the open character of the Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, a venue that is community-friendly and thrives together with its local community.
<Artland> is a miniature of another world—an imaginary kingdom that exists in children's imaginations. It is home to new species of plants and animals that live in a climate and environment similar to Earth's but subject to different conditions. Strangely wondrous, intricate, and yet fantastical, <Artland> affirms that children's creativity, unleashed through play, reaches a scope of inventiveness that surpasses the imagination of adults.
As the creations of the children taking part in the exhibition are added to the <Artland> that Do Ho Suh made, the resulting work will transform into an unpredictable, fantastical space. Building on the various dimensions of children's exhibitions that the Buk-Seoul Museum of Art has attempted so far, this show will test the possibilities of a participatory exhibition shaped through children's spontaneous involvement.
In addition, a children's workbook, <The Mysterious Artland>, written by Do Ho Suh's two children themselves, will be published. The workbook will support children's participatory activities and serve as a guide to help them better understand the mysterious fantasy island of 'Artland.'
