Hanssem-Noroo Paint to prevent indoor air quality degradation and sick house syndrome
Starting with special-order furniture this year, new products planned to go on sale in the first half of next year
Hanssem (CEO Kim Yu-jin), a total home interior specialist company, announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Noroo Paint to develop and expand the application of an 'eco-friendly water-based paint for furniture.' The key terms of the agreement include △launching performance verification and demonstration of the eco-friendly water-based paint, △cooperation on applying the eco-friendly water-based paint to interior materials, △improving the performance and quality of the eco-friendly water-based paint, and △localizing imported raw materials.
Since 2021, Hanssem has established a plan with Noroo Paint to 'develop products that minimize hazardous substances in furniture coating,' carrying out a project to convert the oil-based paints applied to furniture finishes into water-based paints. To date, the companies have achieved some success in developing an eco-friendly water-based paint with physical properties on par with existing oil-based products, as well as localization technology that can replace imported raw materials. Going forward, through additional testing and development, Hanssem plans to continuously expand the scope of application of the eco-friendly water-based paint, beginning with the special-order furniture it supplies to construction companies.
The eco-friendly water-based paint being jointly developed by Hanssem and Noroo Paint offers excellent appearance, gloss stability, hardness, and scratch resistance, and is characterized by containing almost no solvents that generate VOCs (volatile organic compounds), so it produces no odor after drying. With its outstanding physical properties and eco-friendliness, it preserves the grain patterns of interior furniture while preventing indoor air quality degradation and sick house syndrome caused by hazardous substances.
For the development of this paint, the research laboratories of both companies conducted rigorous quality testing of physical properties, safety, and hazard levels, along with standardized management of specifications and hazardous-substance assessments for the use of eco-friendly materials. In addition, they repeatedly performed tests including heat resistance, cracking (splitting), coating-surface adhesion, stain resistance, and scratch resistance to develop a product that meets stringent quality standards.
